I’ve Never Been to Vegas But My Luggage Has {Review}

When you feel like you’re the only one going through hell, you’re not.  When you feel like you’ve abandoned everyone else and now there’s nowhere else to turn, there’s hope.  When your life’s a wreck, your nails are a mess and a boy you love lets you down, there’s someone who understands.

Actually there are a few different someone’s who understand and are willing to be that rock, that foundation, in which you rebuild your life.  And included in that list of someone’s is God, little ol’ me and the author known as The Single Woman, Mandy Hale.

I just finished reading her second book, I’ve Never Been to Vegas But My Luggage Has, and though this poor Tennessee gal has been through the ringer a time or two, whether it be job related or boy-centered, she tells the incredible tale of how she came out swinging, much stronger and more capable to take on the next challenge.Even if you’re not single or are living the American Dream of the house, the husband and the 2.5 children, this book will have you laughing, smiling and crying right along with the ups and downs of the life she has lived. A broken heart, mended together piece by piece over time, and countless dreams dashed upon the pavement are crosses that I thought I bore alone.  With my lack of ability to carry on a successful, loving and faithful relationship with a man, I spent many years believing that I was the common denominator in the equation.  That it must be me that was causing these relationships to fail, time and again.  I was also certain that my overwhelming nature of the anxiety that I deal with on a daily basis was something that I alone suffered through.

Mandy’s vulnerability and boldness in telling the story of the myriad of heartaches she’s encountered, both in her career and in relationships with men, help to show that these struggles that often make us feel isolated and as though there is no way out, are just building blocks to a live full of hope and a bright future.

And I promise you this, Mandy’s relate-ability is not just a front and no matter how wild a ride it seems she has taken in the world of relationships and her career, her story is most definitely not fiction. 

Back in March, I had the most incredible honor meeting Mandy.  As part of her Sass, Class, Compassion tour toured very near to my hometown, I had a chance to go and listen to her share some very real and raw moments of her singleness, but some very poignant moments that helped her to see what a gift her singleness is so that she may grow stronger in a loving and faithful relationship with Christ.

That event changed me.  With her stories and the music of Jaime Jamgochian, there were very few dry eyes left in that room when the night was over.  I will be forever grateful for their encouragement and willingness to accept that call to go and be the powerful voice of single women today.

So what are you waiting for?  Get out there and make the most of this time alone.  Spend this “free time” getting to know yourself and the God that created you.  Build those relationships so that they may provide a strong foundation for a romantic relationship when and if that right guy comes along. And if it doesn’t come along, you’ll be that much better off because your relationship with God will see you through!
