I was an imaginative child, always putting on plays for my parents and making up dance routines to my favorite songs.  So it’s no wonder that I was often asked by grown-ups what I wanted to be when I grew up.

My answers weren’t any less imaginative and often ranged from:

  • wanting to swim with Shamu,
  • be an Olympic gymnast like Mary Lou Retton,
  • skate with Disney on Ice,
  • or to become a bagger at the grocery store

It sure is a good thing that our future career path isn’t determined at the age of four!

As an adult, I have been less imaginative and less certain of what it is that I want to be when I grow up.  Can you relate?

When the sky is the limit, how do I find my life’s purpose?  Especially when Christian culture puts such an emphasis on stepping into our callings.

I’ve worked in food service, as well as being an Executive Director for a Christian mission and retreat center, but neither of those job titles was my purpose.

Those were roles that I’ve assumed using my God-given gifts and abilities.  Both positions encouraged growth in my skills and taught me invaluable lessons.

I’m sure that you can look back over your work history and see how each position has equipped you and shaped you into the woman you are today.

What if our calling isn’t defined in one job title or particular career path?

What if we just continue to LEAD others to Christ, LIVE in community with them, and minister and SERVE them through the many gifts we’ve been given, no matter what role or position we assume?

For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 1:9

You were created on purpose and for a purpose to LEAD + LIVE + SERVE WELL.

For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

What do you want to be…

Maybe we’ve been asking the question all wrong?

What if instead of asking “what” we want to be when we grow up, we ask “who” we want to be?

Putting that slight shift of perspective on that age-old question might just make the next generation’s coming of age a little easier, knowing that God will take care of their gifts and abilities and how to employ them, and they simply need to make the choice whether or not to trust Him to lead the way.

So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding.10 Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better. Colossian 1:9-10
