Note to Self: Remember Who You Are
Today you also sit at a computer desk in a job that has allowed you to live in a 2-bedroom townhouse on your own for almost four years. The paycheck you receive from this job allows you to wake up every morning in a warm bed, and take a hot shower before you drive your 2012 Toyota Corolla to work, where you get to work alongside your father, a hard-working, strict, but faithfully loving man, who you still look up to, even at the age of 30.
Do you remember the days of your life where you didn’t worry about what others thought of you? Where you played and laughed and waved at strangers, just like the little boy that waved at you this morning as you let him and his scowling father cross the street before you in the pouring rain.
Do you remember what it was like to not be insecure, or anxious? Do you remember what it was like before you met that evil character that has robbed you of so many happy moments, that character named Doubt?
Look at this picture above. Look at the crooked smile of that five-year-old version of yourself. Look at the awkward bangs and over-sized ribbons she sported so proudly. Focus on her eyes; how she is looking up with confidence to the photographer, knowing that he would make her smile.
Look up, Bree! Look up to the One who will make you smile, even through your tears. Look up to find your confidence and to banish the doubt you feel so strongly in your heart. Look up to find the definition of who you are.
You are not defined by your job as merely the Administrative Assistant at a local consulting engineering firm. You are not defined by the fact that you have three college degrees, that are collecting dust in some drawer somewhere in your back bedroom since you are not working in your field of study.
You are not defined by the bills that stack up or the debt you have collected. You certainly are not defined by the broken relationships with men that could not remain faithful in a relationship, one where you poured your heart and soul into it, even as you turned a blind eye to their list of short-comings.
Look up, Bree! Look up and thank your God for all that He has done for you. Look up and thank your God for all that He is doing for you. Look up and thank your God for all that He will do for you. Look up and thank your God for the opportunity that you will receive one day, to meet Him face to face and sing His praises forever.
Stop looking at the ground as you pass people on the street. Face your doubts and fears head-on. You know that You can overcome and achieve greatness, if only you begin to Look up to see who you really are.
“got to get [your] good enough from Jesus. [You] belong to Him, [you are] clothed in His righteousness, forever beloved and accepted; a constant receipient of His steadfast love and grace”. – Gary Morland

Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious – the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.” Philippians 4:6-9, The Message
