This is a LONG one, but worth the read… In the This is a LONG one, but worth the read… In the fall of 2019, I excitedly said YES to God in picking back up & dusting off the ministry of hosting online studies. I looked forward to rebuilding a community of women from around the world to study alongside as we invited God to take up residence—an intentional filling— in the hole within us that we so desperately longed to fill, often with the things of this world. I was also working on healing from a significant wound I received during (of all things) my time in vocational ministry. My faith had been used as a welcome mat, so while I was excited to take on this revived ministry role, I was also seriously perplexed about how God could use me. Even though I had served in various ministries over the years, I never quite felt equipped. I found it challenging to connect with God’s Word because I didn’t know how to study it for myself or by myself. 𝗔𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘁, 𝗜 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻. Maybe you can relate. Many of us, church-going Christians, were never taught how to read the Bible or how to get to know the heart of God through His Word. I find no coincidence, but only God, that at the beginning of the shut-down in 2020 I came across Kristi McLelland’s study, Jesus & Women. It was exactly what I needed at that time, even if it effectively wrecked my faith—for the better, may I add. Through Kristi’s reminders that God intends to raise his daughters up out of shame and into a place of honor, I found new confidence and excitement in spending time in His Word, which has only grown over the last 5 years. I’m grateful to have found the tools to learn how to study and get to know God better through reading the Bible 𝙛𝙤𝙧 myself and 𝙗𝙮 myself. 𝗜 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗱’𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱. I allow God Himself to prepare the table before me, so I can feast on His Word. As I began to learn more about the character of Je As I began to learn more about the character of Jesus through studying His context markers, the time in history, geography, as well as the cultural, political, and religious influences of His life, I began to better understand His teachings. And much to my surprise, I found reading the Bible exciting and full of glimpses of the heart of God. I had spent my years in youth group, church camp, college, and even young adult Bible study trying to see where I fit into God’s story, and what I could learn about myself through Scripture. ᴍʏᴛʜ: The Bible was written to me. ᴛʀᴜ ᴍʏᴛʜ: The Bible was written to me. ᴛʀᴜᴛʜ: You’re not the first reader—and that’s actually really good news. It was written 𝘧𝘰𝘳 us — but not 𝘵𝘰 us. Every book in Scripture had a real audience, in a real time, with real struggles. Context honors the original meaning before we apply it to our lives today. Even Jesus’ followers needed to have the Scriptures interpreted for them on the Road to Emmaus. Read Luke 24:27. Jesus shows that Scripture has layers of meaning—what it meant 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯, and how it reveals 𝘏𝘪𝘮 now. But He didn’t skip context, as He interpreted the Scriptures, respecting their original intent and then showing their fulfillment. 𝗕𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗶𝗽: Always ask, “What did this mean to them?” BEFORE asking, “What does it mean to me?” What’s one Bible verse you’ve always read through a “me-first” lens? Why do you weep? He’s not here. He has risen! 🙌🏼✝️🌷 Hope is alive! Jesus is the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, the First Fruit offering, the Way Maker & Promise Keeper, the Redeemer of our past & hope for our future! Praise God! He is risen. We are a people of light. Like a moth to a flame, We are a people of light. Like a moth to a flame, we are drawn to it. In the darkness of night, when the outlook is bleak, we strain our necks and scrape our way forward toward the light, towards Hope. But 2,000 years ago, all Hope seemed lost when Hope personified—our Messiah, the anointed one, was taken off of the cross and laid in a borrowed tomb. What good could possibly come of that!?! Thank the LORD, we have the Hope in the knowledge that Sunday is coming and this is NOT the end of the story. The work accomplished and completed through Christ’s death wasn’t the end. He will walk you through the valley of the shadow of death, and into the promise of the sunrise of Sunday — life everlasting.
