Feel like you’re not “qualified” to study th Feel like you’re not “qualified” to study the Bible? You’re not alone. Imposter syndrome can creep in and whisper things like, “I’m not smart enough” “I don’t know enough” “Who am I to teach others?” But here’s the capital “T” Truth: 𝑮𝒐𝒅 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒒𝒖𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒆𝒅. Q: Do you write in your Bible? A: That is somethi Q: Do you write in your Bible? A: That is something that really took me a long time to feel comfortable doing. In fact, today, my Timehop app reminded me of a post that I shared a couple of years ago about how I used to look down upon my friends who used to write in their textbooks in college. I guess I scoffed at one of my friends, at one time as she was highlighting. She told me, “Bree, you know, I own this book. I bought this book. I don’t intend to return it. It’s not from the library. This is a way I map out and provide myself some lighthouses during the stormy time of life. That way I can come back to and find the information, and know where it is, and that I can find it more easily.” So I really encourage you to take your time reading through the passage, making note of the context, as you are reading, that can teach you more about what is happening. Get a set of your favorite colored pens, to highlight and underline, and write in the margins. Make note of the things that help you build the context of what you’re reading: • the time period, • the names, • key phrases, • context clues down in the footnotes. For more years than I care to admit, reading my Bi For more years than I care to admit, reading my Bible wasn’t on my radar, simply because it was too overwhelming. Whenever I did find the courage to crack open those impossibly thin pages, I would hope and pray that that might be the day I understood what I read. But all too quickly, I’d be overcome with more questions than answers, so again, I’d close my Bible and promise God I’d try again another day. I longed to have insights and find encouragement and comfort from the ancient words like my peers, but I didn’t know if it would ever be possible. But God allowed me to find the book, Jesus & Women, by @kristimclelland that opened up a whole new way of looking at Scripture that helped me fall in love with Jesus all over again. Nearly six years later, I lead weekly Bible studies via Zoom that involve the insights, encouragement, and comfort I longed for years ago, and a deeper connection with the Living God that I ever thought possible. I’m here to tell you that it’s possible for you to say adios to overwhelm and welcome to Bible Study confidence. Scrolling through Pinterest 📌 before bed last n Scrolling through Pinterest 📌 before bed last night, I was amazed by the number of recommended pins that were revealed with each swipe, providing tips for 𝟏𝟓-𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒗𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒔 or 𝑩𝒊𝒕𝒆-𝒔𝒊𝒛𝒆𝒅 𝑩𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒔. I’m all for maximizing my time (full-time employee of 2 full-time jobs here 😵), but it made me sad to recall the number of years that I thought that this type of surface-level Bible study was okay. Now there’s nothing wrong with wanting bite-sized nuggets of God’s truth for your day... something to chew on, but only if we back that up with intentional and focused study. 😬 #ohsnap ⚠️ᴜɴᴘᴏᴘᴜʟᴀʀ ᴏᴘɪɴɪᴏɴ ᴀʟᴇʀᴛ: 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐁𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞. 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝟏𝟓 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬. How can we possibly expect to form a deep and lasting relationship with God by only dedicating 15 minutes out of our busy days spent with Him? 😮 How do we expect Him to refine us and transform our hearts when we barely scratch the surface of His Word or avoid the challenging and convicting passages? 😌 How is it possible to understand the ancient text of our Bibles without spending focused time researching the context surrounding those words? 😏 𝐖𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭. (Thank you 😍) It’s time to take up the challenge to push through the uncomfortable, time-consuming, and difficult-to-understand of Bible study, to come to a better ❤️ knowledge of the Living God by studying His Word... through its context.
